The Barcode Certification Performance Evaluation has
two parts, both of which must be passed at the same sitting of the
Evaluation. The first part is made up of matching, multiple choice and
short answer questions on general terminology, basic MARC and searching.
Passing the first part requires getting 14 of the 28 possible points.
The second part is made of eight hands-on exercises where the barcoder
is asked to follow RPLS
database standards
and procedures in attaching a barcode to
the proper record, reporting a problem with a bibliographic record, and
referring an item to a copy or original cataloger. This portion of the
Evaluation requires getting 50 of the 72 possible points.
Part 1 - For those of you doing this for practice,
please do this section without referring to any supporting materials in
order to get an accurate assessment of your training needs.
Part 2 - Download the pdf files for each of the eight
practice items. For each of the eight items, please complete a
Transaction Record Form (pdf) to explain your actions taken on the appropriate
item in the RPLS Training Database. You will need your library's
barcode labels for each item that you barcode in the RPLS Training
Database (Make sure that you are logging on to the training database, if
you have trouble logging onto the training database please contact RPLS
LLSAP staff.), and be sure to properly record which barcode label you used for
the item on the appropriate transaction record form. If you have double
barcodes, you may simply attach the second barcode label to the
appropriate transaction record form.
When taking the practice test for the final homework
assignment for the two day Barcoding training session, please fax all
printouts to the
Doris McKay at (217) 428-1852.
