Resources & Information on Barcode Certification @ RPLS

The Statewide Cataloging Standards Committee (SCSC) was formed in 2000 and was charged with the responsibility of creating a cataloging standards document that would form the basis of improving the quality of cataloging in the consortial catalogs in Illinois. In support of these standards the SCSC has created a barcoder certification test, which will help to identify the training needs of barcoders.

Thanks to the Database Standards Committee members who did such a great job with the Barcode Certification Prep classes, which enabled 178 RPLS barcoders, copy catalogers and original catalogers to successfully complete the first step in the certification process.

As of July 1st, 2008, we have converted to maintenance mode on Barcode Certification. All new cataloging staff will need to plan on attending the new two day barcode course at RPLS, Part I: "Searching Horizon and HIP" and Part II: "Barcoding Basics"  in their first three months on the job, as well as the Barcode Certification Performance Evaluation, which will be offered quarterly (September, December, March, June). Please plan for this when hiring new staff. By the way, all staff are welcome to take these training courses at anytime as a review or refresher course.

The Barcoder Certification Performance Evaluation has two parts, both of which must be passed at the same sitting of the Evaluation. The first part is made up of matching, multiple choice and short answer questions on general terminology, basic MARC and searching. Passing the first part requires getting 14 of the 28 possible points. The second part is made of eight hands-on exercises where the barcoder is asked to follow RPLS database standard policies and procedures in attaching a barcode to the proper record, reporting any problems with a bibliographic record, and referring items to a copy or original cataloger. This portion of the Evaluation requires getting 50 of the 72 possible points.
