Creating a YES culture @your library — Part 3 As you know,
Rolling Prairie Library System received an LSTA Bring in a Trainer Grant,
“The YES Culture”: Copyright and Customer Service.” The first training
session will be on Wednesday,
November 29th with a focus on Customer Service. Sign up your library
staff today to attend this training session. Library staff may come all day
or to either the morning or afternoon sessions, depending on the library’s
staffing schedule.
To give the training extra impact,
sign your library up for the No Log
exercise. It is not too late!! Just keep the No Log for 1-2 weeks before the
workshop. After the workshop, keep the
Yes/No Log and share the Logs
with RPLS. We will use the Logs to evaluate the success of the training.
One aspect of being able to say Yes to patrons is through interlibrary
loan. No library can hold everything its patrons may need. Through
interlibrary loan, libraries share resources to meet the needs of the
library user in a cooperative manner. The
RPLS LLSAP is one
collaborative used by the membership to search and request materials for
patrons. But another larger collaborative that you have access to is
OCLC World Cat.
Your unique library materials are gathered with over 61 million records of
materials around the world. As a member of the OCLC Collaborative, you have
responsibilities to the collaborative. The first is to add new records into
OCLC. The second is to maintain your records and holdings information. The
third is to check the message file to determine if another library has
requested a book.
These are very important responsibilities. One additional responsibility
is to elect a delegate the Members Council. Last Spring you elected me to be
your delegate. Oct. 29-31 was my first Members Council meeting. Here is
my report of that meeting.
“Funding for Creating a Yes Culture grant was awarded
by the Illinois State Library (ISL) a Division of the Office of the
Secretary of State, using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and
Library Services (IMLS), under the Federal Library Services and Technology
Act (LSTA)”.
