Creating a YES culture @your library — Part 5

Happy New Year!! How are you coming at saying “Yes” to your customers, administrators and fellow staff members?

Over the holidays, did you find examples of good or bad customer services? For me I have noticed that the checkers at the Airport Plaza Kroger store are asking “Did you find everything you needed?” and “Do you need help with anything on the bottom of your cart?” The Bag Boys are asking, “Do you need help with your groceries ma’am?” I find this a nice courteous touch that cost them nothing.

However, I do not like going to McDonalds, any of them, when it is a shift change. At that point, the food is NOT fast food. No one seems to know who is doing what, the registers do not seem to be manned, and the lines are long.

I would like to hear your stories of good and bad customer service. Please share them with me, and I will make them part of my next YES Culture web page.

Copyright is the focus of some upcoming workshops. Dr. Rebecca Butler, a professor at Northern Illinois University is coming to RPLS to present four different copyright sessions. These sessions are organized by type of library. The first part of each will be an overview and background of the copyright law and its basic rules. The second part will be focused on the copyright issues that are found most often in particular types of libraries. With copyright, you may find yourself saying “No.”. After these training sessions, it is hoped, that you can say, “We can not do that, but we can do this!” You will have alternatives for how to meet the needs of the customer while obeying the copyright law.

We are asking people to send in their copyright questions to me, Bev Obert, by Monday February 26th. This will give Dr. Butler time to review and find answers to the questions. Already we have had some very interesting questions sent to us. A simple email will do, so please send in those questions.

Some people have become confused about whether these sessions are in person or online. The answer is both. Rebecca will be here at Rolling Prairie Library System presenting live to an audience and at the same time we will be presenting this information in the RPLS OPAL room. The OPAL room presentations have been added not only to our CLeO database but also on the world wide Opal Calendar, and we are getting many responses from across the country and even from Australia.

Mark your calendars and register for the session you wish to attend. Note that there is a separate registration for on-site or online sessions. The session for Special librarians is 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (@RPLS or OPAL) and School librarians from1:00 – 3:30 PM (@RPLS or OPAL)on March 13. Those for Public Librarians are at 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (@RPLS or OPAL) and Academic librarians from 1:00 – 3:30 PM (@RPLS or OPAL) on March 14. Check out RPLS CLeO for details and to register for the workshops.
