Book Gift Ideas for Christmas

Often parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles want to give books as presents at Christmas time, but just do not know where to start.  Below are some resources to help you find just the right book.

Parent’s Choice Book Award.  They also give awards for DVDs, games, websites and more.

The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books at the University of Illinois has a 25 page Guide Book to Gift Books that you can download.  Each book has a short summary giving you an idea of what the book is about.

Looking for some good books about animals? Try the Henry Bergh Children’s Book Awards given by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).  They have children’s books in the areas of fiction, nonfiction and illustrations.

The Humane Society of the United States Youth organization has a KIND Book Award.  This is another good source of great books for kids about animals.

Book Awards

The Newbery Medal for outstanding literature for Children.  The 2008 winner was Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! : Voices from a medieval village by Laura Amt Schlitz.

The Caldecott Medal awarded to the illustrator of the most distinguished picture book for children.  The 2008 winner was Brian Selznick for the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

The Coretta Scott King Book Award is given to African American authors and Illustrators.  The 2008 author was Christopher Paul Curtis for Elijah of Buxton.  The award for illustration went to Ashley Bryan for Let It Shine: three favorite spirituals.

The Pura Belpré Award is given to Latino/Latina writers and illustrators.  The 2008 winner for Narrative was The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano written by Margarita Engle and one of the honor books was Frida: ¡Viva la vida! Long Live Life! written and illustrated Carmen T. Bernier-Grand.  The winner for Illustration was Los Gatos Black on Halloween, illustrated by Yuyi Morales, written by Marisa Montes.

The Geisel Award if given to the author and illustrator of the most distinguished book for beginning readers.  The 2008 book was, There is a Bird on Your Head! By Mo Willems.  The award honors Theodor Seuss Geisel.  If you liked the Dr. Seuss books, you will love the books that have received the Geisel Award. 

The Robert F. Sibert Information Book Award is given annually to the author and illustrator of the most distinguished informational book.  The 2008 winner was Peter Sis for his book The Wall: Growing up behind the Iron Curtain.

Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? By Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle

Good Sports: rhymes about running, jumping, throwing, and more by Jack Prelutsky a great book of short poems all about sports.
