Summer Reading
Summer is coming. Yeah!! It is a time of vacations,
maybe some down time for our school or academic librarians and, of course,
summer reading programs at our public libraries.
This summer, take some time to do some reading
yourself. I challenge you to stretch your reading horizons this year.
First—check out the books on the various Illinois
Children’s Choice awards, the
Monarch (pdf),
Caudill (pdf) and
Abe (pdf). (Free Acrobat
Reader) Pick one book from each list to read and reacquaint yourself with
the literature our youth are reading.
Second—read a fiction book from a genre you don’t
normally read. If you read historical fiction, try science fiction. Do
you read mysteries? Then try a fantasy. Stretch those reading muscles.
Not sure what to read, check out NoveList.
Third—pick up a book on management, problem solving, or
personalities. Suggestions:
·
What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall
Goldsmith
·
The Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam
·
Strengths Finder by Tom Rath
Fourth—pick-up a book on some aspect of librarianship
or libraries. To find one, just go to HIP and type in the subject:
“libraries, library, or library science,” and you will find a title. Or
visit RPLS and check out the professional collection.
Fifth—read a book from the fiction or non-fiction best
seller list.
Have a good summer, and let me know if you find any
good reads!!!
