Membership
When you become a member
of an organization, association, or system, you do it because you gain a
benefit from being a member. What we often forget is that we also have
responsibilities to that group. As a member of RPLS, you have the
responsibility to attend a certain number of Continuing Education events,
the ability to serve on committees, and the responsibility to vote for
members to the Board of Directors. The new System standards have a list of
member responsibilities assigned to each standard. As a member, you should
review the draft standards and send a response with questions or concerns.
It is a responsibility.
Many of you are members of
OCLC. You pay your fee, catalog your books and use interlibrary loan, but
do you realize you have responsibilities also? One of those is to nominate
people for spots on the Americas Regional Council Executive Committee and to
Global Council. You should have received an OCLC Member Update email on
March 16 with information on the process. If you did not, you can find this
information on the
ARC website. If you do not know anyone to nominate, be aware that
in late May you will be asked to vote for those that have been nominated.
These people will represent you at the ARC and Global Councils. Update your
voting credentials if you have not already done so and remember to vote!
ILA, ISLMA, ALA, etc. all are associations which
librarians or libraries join. Each has an award program that annually
solicits candidates for the various awards. As a member you have a
responsibility to submit names to the committees of people you think are
worthy for an award.
Membership: It brings you rights, responsibilities and
benefits. Enjoy your rights and benefits, but don’t forget those
responsibilities.
