Minutes of the
Data Base Committee Meeting
March 20, 2000

The DBS met March 20, 2000 in the training lab at RPLS for a demo of records from Marc of Quality.

MARC of QUALITY is the company used to move Marion database Bibliographic records to VIC using OCLC. The committee members were able to see records that had some concerns and how are these records to be dealt with.

Total number of fixes : 165019

Total number of fixed records: 149321

There were records pulled that could not be sent to OCLC because the errors are serious enough that the records should be fixed for the sake of the library's own database.

Total number of records pulled but not printed : 3784

Periodical records 3763 handled by the Union List of Serials

OCLC charges for every record sent, so you do not want to send records that are duplicates.

Total number of duplicates : 25401

Records with duplicate 010 LCCN 21817

Records with duplicate 020 ISBN 3584

DBC will be meeting Thurs April 13 in computer lab as a work day (9:30-4) to widdle down that number.

Total bad coding records pulled : 41491

Missing 245 (title) 255

Missing 260 and 300 (imprint, phy des) 15182 (quick records, paperbacks, items from cctitle, geac world compression to mash to MARC records - this was a quick analysis

Missing 260 (imprint) 2958

Missing 260 subfield b (publisher) 12697

These were items with the larger numbers associated with.

A large number of records that are in the fixed fields TYPE did not agree with type of record in the bottom part of bib record. Date did not agree with 260 subfield c e x.

TYPE j (audiobook) Field 245 subfield h was missing to indicate sound rec. so thought it was a reg book so what is it?

Lot of inconsistencies : if accompanying materials in body did not indicate in fixed fields, etc.
