Government Internet Resources

Federal Government Sites

Top three – The three most used sites among government documents librarians polled:

www.fedstats.gov/ – The locator for government agencies that gather significant statistics.

www.access.gpo.gov/ – A service of the U.S. Government Printing Office that provides free electronic access to a wealth of important information produced by the Federal Government. All information is the official, published version and the information retrieved can be used without restriction, unless specifically noted.

www.census.gov/ – Find population and economic statistics and trends.

Other government sites -- There are at least hundreds of sites. This is just a sampling of the more commonly used ones.

www.nasa.gov – Just about everything you could want to know about the space program.

www.savingsbonds.gov – Whatever you want to know about savings bonds and the treasury. You can also view information about the Public Debt from this site.

travel.state.gov -- This State Department site provides passport and visa information, and travel warnings.

www.lib.lsu.edu/gov/fedgov.html – Comprehensive general list of government agencies. This is a great site if the patron knows the name of the agency, and that it’s on the Web, but has no idea of the address.

lcweb.loc.gov – "American Memory" of our history past ways of life. What significant event in history happened on your birthday?

thomas.loc.gov – What’s happening on Capitol Hill? Read the text of bills, the congressional record, and learn about the legislative branch of our government. Hint – use the search tool at the BOTTOM of the screen. It is easier to use and works faster.

www.uspto.gov – US Patent and Trademark office.

www.defenselink.mil/locator – Locates military pages and documents.

www.irs.gov – The IRS is trying to put on a friendlier face for the public. Here you can find explanations of taxes, forms, an general information.

www.nps.gov – National Park service.

www.healthfinder.gov – Sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services, this site provides a gateway to consumer health information to be found within Federal Government agencies.

www.consumer.gov/ – Several government agencies have pooled their consumer information on this site. Includes Y2K information.

Foreign Governments

www.gksoft.com/govt/ – While this is not sponsored by the government, it is a valuable government resource. Governments on the WWW was listed as one of the best reference web sites in the April 15, 1998 issue of Library Journal. This site provides access to governmental links in over 200 countries. The links are to sites IN THAT COUNTRY, and so, are in that language. Look for a link labeled "English" or for a British flag to read the translated version. That option is NOT available at every site.

Illinois State Government Sites

www.state.il.us – This is the official home page of the State of Illinois There are many links here to state and local services. There is keyword search capability.

www.iml.org – The Illinois Municipal League. This site links to local governments. Is my city in here?

www.wiu.edu/library/govpubs – Western Illinois University’s list. This is most useful for its Illinois links, especially printable pamphlets.

www.legis.state.il.us/ – The Illinois state legislature. Find names and contact data for legislators, the legislative schedule, and more.
