Database Standards Committee Meeting Minutes

Richland Community College

November 14,2001

10:00 am

The database standards committee met at Richland Community College on November 14th 2001 at 10:00am.

Welcome new members and confirmed email addresses to be sent to RPLS.

Update on non-certified libraries. To date there are eight libraries that are still not certified to work in the Marion database at any level. Certified letters were to be sent to these libraries.

Searching for records, then downloading and sending to RPLS to add to the DRA database is a great advantage for high volume libraries. The only drawback is you must have more than 10, but less than 30 items to send. You also have to take ILL training and obtain a user name and password.

Patsy reported that mistakes are still being made when editing records. Certain fields must be filled in or they will be returned for correction. You must complete the 260, 245 and 300 fields. They must also be in the correct format. Questions should be addressed to Patsy. Her email address is changing and she will let us know as soon as possible what it will be.

Decatur Public Library is still working out problems, we are not placing “holds” on any records and at this time we are not requesting any items. It is hoped by the time we meet again that all the “bugs” will be worked out and DPL will be up and running smoothly.

Training was discussed and new ideas were mentioned on how to best train individuals at varying degrees of skill. Our new training person, Diane Kovach, is working on new training ideas using WEB based training programs. There is a problem trying to get everyone on the same level, pre requisites were discussed. Is it possible for people to take basic computer training before they are introduced to netcat? It is hoped that Diane Kovach will come up with a workable solution that would address these needs.

She will be spending one week per month visiting RPLS and addressing training problems and solutions.

Cataloging will be her first priority.

New material codes were discussed. # 43 was thought to be new fiction book, however; that code number is already in use. Greenville has withdrawn as a DRA user.

Beverly from DPL brought in some books she had questions about attaching.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 9th, 10:00am at Richland Community College.
