Government Document Codes

 

Use one of the following codes in the fixed field (subfield “Gvt”) when you are cataloging a government document.  If the item is not a government document, leave the subfield blank.

 

a                      Autonomous or semi-autonomous component.

 

c                      Multilocal (regional combinations of jurisdictions below the state level.)

 

f                       Federal/national.

 

I                       International intergovernmental bodies.

 

l                       Local jurisdictions (counties, cities, towns, etc.)

 

m                     Multistate (regional combinations of jurisdiction at state level.)

 

o                      Government publication, level undetermined.

 

s                      State, provincial, territorial, dependent, etc. jurisdictions.

 

u                      Unknown whether item is government publication.

 

z                      Government publication, level other than can be specified by code values.

 

Consider an item to be a government publication if a government agency is named in the imprint as publisher or distributor.  Theses and dissertations are not considered government publications.
