ISLMA/LBSS ENDOWMENT FUND GRANT

Illinois School Library Media Association is thrilled to announce that 160 Illinois schools and libraries will receive the second annual ISLMA/LBSS Endowment Fund book grants.  Grant recipients, who agreed to participate in the Children’s Choice programs, will be shipped one set of books for the 2010 reading campaign at the level indicated on their grant application.  The Illinois children’s choice reading awards programs are the Monarch Award (k-3), the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Book Award (4-8), and the Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award (9-12).  Students throughout the state of Illinois may participate in the programs by reading these books and voting for their favorite title. A complete listing of grant recipients is posted on the ISLMA/LBSS Endowment Fund Website

The Illinois School Library Media Association received funds for the endowment fund when the nonprofit Library Book Selection Service dissolved in June 2005.  A stipulation of the agreement between LBSS and ISLMA was that the assets be invested in order to fund grants to encourage students’ reading of quality literature in Illinois.

LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is urging students in grades 4-12 to enter the 2010 “Letters About Literature” contest, a national reading and writing contest sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and the Illinois Center for the Book in partnership with Target.

"Every year students across the nation write letters to authors, living or deceased, describing how a book positively impacted their life," said White, who serves as honorary chair of the Illinois Center for the Book. "Anyone who has read these letters can see how literature inspires and touches the lives of our young people. Students truly enjoy this contest, and I hope thousands of Illinois students will participate this year."

The deadline to enter the competition is December 12, 2009. State winners will be announced in April 2010. For more information about the competition, contact Bonnie Matheis at 217-558-2065. Information can also be found here.

  RECOMMENDED SITE

Vicki Hall from Springfield School District recommends the free webinars that Classroom 2.0 has available.  After just a few minutes of looking around the site, I have to agree with her.

Vicki says, “I just participated in a webinar on Elluminate from Classroom 2.0 about the fantastic web site, AllaboutExplorers.com.  The creators of the web site took us through a web tour of the site. The site teaches students that not everything you read on the web is true and you need to check for accuracy. Start by reading, "About this Site".

WHAT HAPPENED TO SEPTEMBER?

I’m not alone in wondering this; I heard it at the grocery store just last night.  My response?  “I’d like to know what happened to August, too!”

In reality, I know  what happened to August and September.  Interesting projects kept me out of the office large chunks of time and illustrated the old adage, “Time flies when you are having fun.”  It’s no wonder the September issue of Let’s Get It All Together  got lost in the shuffle.

  • Farm Progress Show
Louise Greene and I coordinated a library booth at the Farm Progress Show.  Thanks to help and contributions from our member libraries, we talked to people from more than 13 different states,7 different countries and all over Illinois about the resources available for small and rural communities at their local libraries.  As part of that effort, we gave away over 5,000 paperback books. ALA sent Megan McFarlane, Campaign Coordinator for ALA's Campaign for America’s Libraries, to visit the RPLS Think Outside the Barn @ Your Library booth.  Megan wrote an article about Think Outside the Barn @ Your Library and how it promotes libraries. ALA has pictures from Farm Progress show on the  ALA’s Flickr page, and also a YouTube video with Bev talking about Think Outside the Barn @ Your Library.

  • Association for Rural and Small Libraries
As a result of the Farm Progress Show booth, Louise and I were able to be presenters at the September conference for the Association of Rural and Small Libraries in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  Our session highlighted the “Think Outside the Barn @ Your Library” theme and Farm Progress Show booth, but went beyond that to discuss ways of advocating for libraries at community events of all kinds.  Louise and I had a great time learning about local festivals all around the United States and talking about ways to include the library in local events.
