  Earth Day – April 22, 2010

It’s the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.  Have fun with crafts and activities from Kaboose or explore some of the suggestions listed on the Picadome Elementary School (Kentucky) web page.

Recycle this Book:  100 Top Children’s Book Authors Tell You How to Go Green, edited by Dan Gutman, is just right for sharing in the library on Earth Day.  The book is divided into short chapters, each written by a different children’s or young adult author, including David Adler, Todd Strasser, and Peg Kehret.  School Library Journal gave this book a starred review.

The Lorax provides an Earth Day message in typical Dr. Suess style.  Share the book then follow up with fun and activities from Seussville’s Lorax page  and the Lorax Project .

Celebrate Earth Day by recycling books.

  • Set up an altered book program for teens and tweens.  Texas Teens Reads has suggestions.
  • April 22 is perfect day for a Book Swap.  Invite patrons or students to bring in books they are tired of and then switch for books brought in by other patrons.  If you have left over books, donate them to a local good cause such as a homework help group or after school program.

ISLMA ADVOCACY

Have you looked at the advocacy section of the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) Professional Resources page?  In these times of budget shortfalls and staffing cuts, this list should be required reading.

What have you done this school year to make sure the decision makers in your school district know the value of the school library?

TELL YOUR STORY

Roberta Meyer, school librarian at St. Anthony Schools in Effingham recently shared a good example of making your school and community aware of the professional nature of a school librarian’s job.  Upon returning from the Illinois Reading Council Conference, she developed a press release highlighting the sessions she attended and pointing out how those sessions will benefit the students she serves.  This press release could be shared with school district staff and families through newsletters, board reports and web sites, as well as with the community as a whole in local newspapers and other news outlets.  Contact Roberta or Rachel Miller, if you would like to see a copy of Roberta's press release. Thanks for sharing, Roberta!

Do you have an example of library advocacy that you would like to share?  Please send a copy to Rachel Miller.  Electronic documents are preferred for easier sharing.
