IT’S A PRIZE … NO, IT’S A PROMOTION … NO, IT’S BOTH! Louisville Free Public Library in Kentucky has used yard signs proclaiming “A library champion lives here” as prizes for summer reading. After earning a yard sign, families are encouraged to send pictures of library champions posing with their signs to be posted on the library web page. Take a look at a screen shot posted on Flickr to see an example. More details about the Louisville program are included in a comment posted to the Library Bytes blog in 2007. Brian Mathews’ “Next Step” column in American Libraries recently mentioned a similar promotion at Calcasieu Parish Public Library in Louisiana. “The [Yard Sign] project was inspired by Louisville (Ky.) Free Public Library and rewarded kids who read 10 books over the summer with a yard sign that proudly stated: ‘A library champion lives here.’ The response was phenomenal. [Library Director Michael] Sawyer said that the initiative demonstrated in a very visual manner how much support there is for the library. In addition, it created a sense of positive peer-pressure that generated excitement for children and their parents.”

GET READY FOR SUMMER Reading is Fundamental’s " Guide to Summertime Reading for Children of All Ages" is a good document for both school and public libraries to share with families as they transition from the school year to summer activities. This free download notes that children lose one to three months of learning every summer and then provides tips and strategies for preventing that loss. The valuable suggestion to use the public library is featured prominently in the pamphlet. Other Summer Reading Resources from RIF:
