JUNE IS… .

June 27 Birthday of the Newbery Medal

The Newbery Medal was awarded for the very first time on June 27, 1922.  This first award for outstanding contributions to children’s literature was given to The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon.  Eighty-eight years later, the award continues, with When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead as the most recent winner.  Encourage your readers, both young and old, to take a fresh look at the award winners.  Happy Birthday, Newbery Medal!

SCARE UP A GOOD BOOK

As you put the finishing touches on your summer reading program, remember these Scare Up a Good Book resources:

PLAN AHEAD FOR TEEN READ WEEK

Planning something special for Teen Read Week? Young   Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) is offering a way to help pay for it.   Mini grants are available  to libraries that will be offering programs, services or events for Teen Read Week.  Deadline to apply is June 1, 2010 and applications are available here

Teen Read Week 2010 is October 17-23.  This year’s theme is Books with Beat @ your library and encourages teens to read poetry, audiobooks, books about music and more, for the fun of it.

WrestleMania Reading Challenge continues for its fifth year during Teen Read Week 2010.  As part of this program, students pledge to read 5 books or graphic novels between Teen Read Week and WrestleMania 27 on April 3, 2011.  Prizes and incentives are provided through the program.  Librarians and educators can learn more details and register here.  Registration deadline for WrestleMania Reading Challenge is July 31.

SCHOOL LIBRARY PROFILE SHEET

School libraries are required to return a school library profile sheet to RPLS by June 15 of each year.  This form summarizes the school year we are completing and provides basic information about your library.  Unlike other forms that are submitted as a district, each building is required to return the profile sheet.  The form is available on the RPLS website.  Print out a copy, fill it out, and return to Rachel Miller at RPLS before June 15.

  TRAVELING LIBRARIANS GO TO LUNCH

Are you a school librarian that travels between libraries?  Does your location change depending on the time of day or day of the week? Do you worry about “auto-pilot” taking you to the wrong place on the wrong day?  Here’s a chance to network with others that perform the same juggling act you do. Swap stories, share solutions, and maybe even learn tips to remember which school you are headed to!  Traveling Librarians Go to Lunch will meet on Tuesday, June 15 at 11:30 am at Mario's North.  Lunch is dutch treat. There is a lunch buffet, or you may order off the menu. Please be sure to register in L2 because Rachel will make reservations based on that number.

ILLINET INTERLIBRARY LOAN AND RECIPROCAL BORROWING STATISTICAL SURVEY

The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan and Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey FY2010 (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010) is available for statistical reporting. The Survey is accessible here. A printable, working copy of the survey and the instructions are accessible under the Instructions tab. The deadline for submission is September 30, 2010. Please take a few minutes and provide a data snapshot of your library's interlibrary loan and, if applicable, reciprocal borrowing activity.

If you have questions, then please follow these guidelines:

END THE YEAR WITH A BOOK

Readers of Choice Literacy have contributed ideas for literacy activities for the final days of school.  Read Alouds for the Last Days of School will give you great ideas for ending the school year with a good book.

GRAPHIC NOVEL OVERVIEW

Scholastic has published a graphic novel discussion guide  that is available online as a free download.

Using Graphic Novels with Children and Teens:  A Guide for Teachers and Librarians provides an overview of what a graphic novel is, how it is a valuable tool for literacy, and addresses some common concerns with using graphic novels in a school.  This discussion guide could be a valuable tool in talking with classroom teachers and administrators, as well as a good basic guide for the librarian.  Be sure to scroll through to the end of the guide and find the list of additional graphic novel resources.

SUMMER SLIDE

Both school and public librarians make an effort this time of year to spread the word about summer slide, that loss of reading skills that can occur from lack of practice in the summer.  Maria Salvadore recently posted about summer slide on her blog Page by Page. Maria, a children’s literature expert for Reading Rockets, takes a fun look at how families can use books with recipes included in the story to extend the experience.  Be sure to click on her link to “research, a valuable list of resources and reports documenting the value of summer reading.

FREEBIE

Poster Street provides “motivational, funny and thought provoking wall art” that can be downloaded and printed for free on 8.5x11 paper.  They can also be embedded in blogs or websites.  Browse the list of inspirational quotes and witty sayings to find the one that is just right for you!
