World Juggling Day – June 18th, 2011

World Juggling Day comes just in time to spotlight royal jesters for A Midsummer Knight’s Read.  Sponsored by the International Jugglers’ Association, this special day is designed to spread the fun of juggling.

Get your jester’s hat, assorted soft objects, and start practicing.  Give yourself bonus points if you can juggle and tell jokes at the same time!

SCHOOL LIBRARY PROFILE SHEET

School libraries are required to return a school library profile sheet to RPLS by June 15 of each year.  This form summarizes the school year we are completing and provides basic information about your library.  Unlike other forms that are submitted as a district, each building is required to return the profile sheet.  The form is available on the RPLS website.  Print out a copy, fill it out, and return to Rachel Miller at RPLS before June 15.

     RPLS EMAIL ACCOUNTS

RPLS member librarians with rpls.lib.il.us accounts need to update to a different email account immediately.  It appears unlikely at this point that the new system will have the staff necessary to maintain a mail server for its members. You can get free email accounts from AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and others. Please let us know what your new email address is and when it is OK to close your rpls.lib.il.us email account. All accounts should be closed by June 30, 2011. RPLS Prairie News has a list of  things to remember when transitioning to a new email address.

A MIDSUMMER KNIGHT'S READ

As you put the finishing touches on your summer reading program, remember these iREAD resources:

GRANT OPPORTUNITY

The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation, Inc. (LLCF)   is giving $500-$3,000 grants to public and school libraries serving at-risk children.  Other types of libraries serving young people may be eligible; check the Funding Eligibility page for full details.  The LLCF library grant program provides funds for the purchase of books for children in grades preschool through grade 8.

Applications must be postmarked by June 15, 2011.

COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU: JUDY MOODY

The beloved children’s book series featuring Judy Moody is coming to the big screen.  Judy Moody and The Not Bummer Summer opens June 10, 2011.  This family movie captures the Judy Moody spirit in a whole new story.

PRINT MATERIAL AND CHILDREN'S LEARNING

A recent study commissioned by Reading is Fundamental (RIF) shows what librarians have long known:  exposure to print material makes a significant difference in reading performance.   “In an unprecedented, near- exhaustive search uncovering 11,000 reports and analyzing 108 of the most relevant studies, children's book lending and ownership programs were shown to have positive behavioral, educational, and psychological outcomes.”

More details are available in either a short summary  or in the full report.

SUMMER…. STANDARDS….EXTRAVAGANZA!

That’s right…ISLMA is offering you the chance to learn how to implement the new program guidelines, Linking for Learning, to evaluate your library program and as a much-needed advocacy tool for your library program. In addition, Joyce Karon, Illinois P-20 Council member and former member of the Illinois State Board of Education will be giving us the latest information on the Common Core Standards and how school librarians should be on the cutting edge of using these standards when working with our colleagues. We will finish our day with an update on how the Common Core Standards are affecting a new version of I-SAIL.
