CONGRATULATIONS!: Please join RPLS in congratulating Tammy Schnell. Tammy has been appointed as Associate Dean of Library at Lincoln Land Community College. Tammy is filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Phil Arndt. She was the Technical Services Director in the Library, and she has been serving as the Interim Associate Dean of the Library since February 2010. She received her Master of Library Science and Bachelor of Arts and Journalism from Indiana University. Tammy has been very active in CARLI, IACRL and RPLS Legislative Day activities over the years. |

NEW PUBLIC LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION ACT GRANT PROGRAM: The rollout of the new Public Library Construction Grant Program will commence very soon. If your public library has been waiting for the program announcement, and you believe you would be able to submit an application this spring, please send a simple Statement of Interest to the State Library via email. Put the phrase “Statement of Interest” in the subject line, and place only the name of your public library and the phrase “Public Library Construction Act Grant application” in the body of the message. Send the email to Becky Hunter. This is in addition to the Live & Learn Construction Grant. FY 2011 ILLINOIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNUAL REPORT (IPLAR): The Illinois State Library is pleased to release the Illinois Public Library Annual Report (IPLAR) FY2011 using the Bibliostat Collect software for data collection. The web-based IPLAR is accessible at http://collect.btol.com. To access the Bibliostat Collect site, you will need to know your library’s Illinois State Library (ISL) User Name and Password. Your library’s User Name is your ISL control number and ISL main branch number (00, zero zero NOT alpha “o”). Your library’s Password is your ISL password for the main branch. 2010 ILLINOIS HISTORY: READ ALL ABOUT IT!: Join staff, volunteers, and patrons of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum for a lively lunch hour discussion of Illinois history topics. You are welcome to bring your lunch and your thoughts on what we’ve been reading. We meet on the third Tuesdays every other month, beginning at noon in the Library Classroom. 2011 marks the sesquicentennial of the start of the American Civil War. The March and September discussions this year will feature Civil War titles as they relate to the conflict’s 1861 happenings. Here is this year’s reading list:

PENNY SEVERNS LITERACY GRANT UPDATE: The Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Grant Application is available online and is due Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at 4 p.m. A webinar grant information session was offered December 8, 2010, and can be viewed at the link provided above. The Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Grant is funded by the Library Services and Technology Act, used in cooperation with local literacy programs to serve low literate and limited-English proficient families. 2011 ALA YOUTH MEDIA AWARDS ANNOUNCED: Here is the list of winners. The 2011 Newbery Medal winner is “Moon over Manifest,” written by Clare Vanderpool. The 2011 Caldecott Medal winner is “A Sick Day for Amos McGee,” illustrated by Erin E. Stead and written by Philip C. Stead. Many notable awards were announced at the same time, include the Coretta Scott King Awards and the Michael L. Printz Award. |

Meet featured authors and speakers, learn what's new in children's publishing, enjoy a moveable breakfast feast where you'll dine with our featured authors, participate in raffles and earn CPDU credits. We're delighted to celebrate dozens of Illinois authors who will be joining us as well. Authors will be autographing books, and you'll go home with fun giveaways. The conference runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 a.m.) and is chock full of valuable information and opportunities to meet and share with fellow educators.
