The Horizon Serials Module

Beginning with the 2006 issues, all magazines are cataloged and checked in through the Horizon Serials module.
- There will be no records called <Title of magazine> -- 2006 (or subsequent years). All records used for magazines and journals, beginning in 2006, will be serial records. Any records found in the database with the format of <Title of magazine> -- 2006, 2007, etc., will be deleted, and libraries tagged on to those records will be required to re-enter their 2006 and subsequent issues using the Serials module.
If you catalog a magazine in Horizon, you will use the Serials Module for that magazine, beginning in 2006. Magazines not cataloged in Horizon may be manually recorded and circulated in whatever way the library normally uses. To repeat, Serials Module information on these pages only applies to those magazines that a library currently catalogs or circulates in the Horizon database.
The Serials Subcommittee will enter bibliographic and copy records for each library's magazines. If a library subscribes to a new magazine for which there is no copy record registered to their library, they should contact the Serials Subcommittee to have that record created. Creating copy records is tricky, so the Committee would like to do that work for the libraries.

It groups all issues (from 2006 on) under one record. Patrons and library staff won't have to look under several different records to determine the extent of a library's holdings of a magazine.
In the future, when the Committee continues work on retroconverting records from earlier years of magazine holdings, those holdings will also appear under one record.
Title and format changes will be traceable. Libraries and patrons will be able to clearly see all the titles under which a magazine has published.
Libraries will be able to monitor the arrival of their magazine issues. If an expected issue is not checked in, Horizon will remind the library staff. If desired, the staff can print a claim slip for the missing issue, to fax or send to their vendor or publisher. Issues that arrive damaged can be checked in as damaged upon receipt.
Libraries that wish to generate routing slips, to send an issue of a magazine to various people in their building or agency, may build those lists in Horizon and generate them automatically each time an issue is checked in.
