MERGER PROGRESS The merger group needs YOUR input. This is your opportunity to have your voice heard about what you want a new library system to look like and what services should be offered. This is a very important survey! The deadline is November 1st - fill it out today! On November 10, 2010, Rolling Prairie Library System will host the discussion of the four Southern Systems in Decatur. This is an open meeting.

Friend Your Library: a discussion on how to create or revive a Friends of the Library group. The speakers will be among those who are currently part of successful efforts to support their local libraries. Here are some of the issues they will address:
· The Nuts and Bolts of a Friends Group – from 501c3 status to officers to accounting · Ideas to Recruit Additional Members or Revive a Friends Group · Funds, Grants - Coming and Going · Successful Events – Ongoing, Special and Extra-Special · Communication and Cooperation within the Community Even though a Trustee should not serve on a Friends Group board, both groups should work in harmony with the library’s best interests at heart. Mirror, Mirror On the Wall I recently attended the annual conference of the Association of Small and Rural Libraries in Denver, Colorado. I was just elected to the board of directors and so the conference was a lot of work. But I was able to attend two sessions concerned with library boards and with board members’ performance and behavior. How about the library board that re-arranged all the stacks and books in the entire library over a weekend without consulting the library director? How about the library board president that only allowed fellow friends to speak at board meetings? How about the library board president who “borrowed” library equipment and staff for a local festival? Sadly, all true. These were some of the scenarios workshop attendees wrestled with during the morning. The next day I attended a session titled “Hometown Ethics: Making Hard Decisions at Your Community Library”. I wish all of you reading this could have been present to hear how thorny issues and relationships CAN be resolved. Among other ideas, these requirements were given as ingredients for a successful library board:
